Like most readers, I imagine, I’ve evolved a set of more-or-less strict rules over the centuries. Some of them involve just myself alone, things like “put the review of a book in the book itself, not in your journal,” or “never pay an amount for a book that you’ll actually remember the next day.” But some of those rules reach out to involve innocent bystanders, things like “never lend, just give,” or “yes, you swine” in response to the inevitable “Have you actually read all these books?”
