The work and nature of criticism itself seldom makes an explicit appearance in the Penny Press itself, even though a reliably hefty portion of the Penny Press is made up of book criticism. This is understandable: if it’s comet-strike rare to find a passionate reader, it’s honest-politician rare to find anybody who wants to read about the mechanics of book reviewing. Even most book critics I’ve known have had no interest in the nuts and bolts of their own craft.
