Our book today is A Book Hunter’s Holiday by A.S.W. Rosenbach, a 1936 collection of book-collecting histories, vignettes, and anecdotes from the man who was known as the prince of antiquarian book collectors. It’s a chatty, illustrated volume that manages to preserve Rosenbach’s voice, which can be a mixed blessing: one the one hand, he could be wonderfully companionable and was genuine in his omnivorous interests, but on the other hand, he had the full measure of poisonous inhuman coldness that all obsessive collectors have, regardless of the object of their obsession.
