On the surface, the 17 July issue of The New Yorker looks to be trying its best to get and hold my attention. In Jessica Winter’s long piece on her great-grandfather (who appears to have been a serial criminal and scumbag, although the weight of her piece seems to want to suggest either that he somehow wasn’t, or that it’s somehow immaterial), for instance, one of “my guys” gets a quick mention:
