Some Penguin Classics, as we’ve noted more often than we’d like, seem very nearly impenetrable, which is extra odd when the text in question has been read and memorized and annotated and taught and embraced by countless millions over the millennia, and additionally odd when the intractability resists even the wonderful standard Penguin Classics approach: the acquiring of first-rate scholars and translators, the presentation of texts in inviting paperback editions with plenty of supporting critical material like notes and appendices.
