Despite my constant, simmering irritation with the New York Times Book Review, there’s almost always some item, some little detail of each new number, that gets the old anticipatory juices flowing. Will a phenom review a has-been? Will a household name review an also-ran? Will the Times double or even triple down on its misbegotten policy of encouraging rather than banishing conflicts of interest?
